Solar Filter Sheet

• •Filter first in line: the filter must be the first element between the sun and the instrument. Never use it behind an eyepiece or lens.
• •Inspect before each use: check for scratches, pinholes, delamination or separation. If any damage is found, discard immediately — a damaged filter offers no protection.
• •Truss telescopes: cover the open tube section before use. Sunlight entering from the side bypasses the front filter, reaches the eyepiece unfiltered, and will cause severe, instant eye injury.
• •Binoculars need TWO filters: binoculars have two separate optical paths. Fit a filter over BOTH front lenses. Never use binoculars with only one lens filtered — the unfiltered side will cause instant, permanent eye injury.
• •Secure the filter properly: attach it firmly to the aperture so it cannot be blown off by wind or knocked off accidentally.
• •Orientation: the silver (reflective) side must face the sun; the black (absorptive) side faces the instrument.
• •Supervise children at all times. This product is not a toy.
• •Take regular breaks between observation sessions to prevent eye fatigue.

Intended Use: a solar filter accessory for optical instruments, supplied in sheet format. It is cut to size and assembled into a rigid frame that covers the full FRONT aperture of an optical instrument (telescope, binoculars or camera lens), for observation and photography of solar eclipses, transits and sunspots through the instrument.

Limitations: it provides protection ONLY when placed as the first optical element in the light path, before any objective lens, mirror or aperture. It does NOT protect when placed behind an eyepiece or after any element that concentrates sunlight. It is NOT a standalone eye filter — never hold it to the eyes or use it for direct eye-to-sun viewing without an instrument.

1. 1Measure and cut: measure the full aperture of your instrument. Cut the filter sheet to size, allowing at least 10 mm overlap beyond the aperture on all sides.
2. 2Orient the filter: position it with the silver (reflective) side facing outward toward the sun and the black (absorptive) side facing inward toward the instrument.
3. 3Mount to frame: secure the filter into a rigid frame or cell that fully covers the instrument aperture, with no gaps where unfiltered sunlight could bypass the filter and reach the optics. Mount it firmly. Wrinkles or ripples in the film are normal and do not affect safety or performance.
4. 4Attach to instrument: fit the framed filter snugly over the front of the instrument. It must not be removable by wind, vibration or accidental contact — use fasteners, friction fit or tape as appropriate.
5. 5Verify before use: before pointing the instrument at the sun, confirm there are no gaps, light leaks or loose edges. Check for pinholes by looking through the instrument at a bright indoor light. If any pinhole, scratch or light leak is detected, discard the filter immediately — do not patch or repair it.

Temperature equalisation: allow the instrument and filter to adjust to the outside temperature for at least 15 minutes before observing.

Ghosting: if ghosting occurs due to internal reflections, tilt the filter slightly relative to the objective lens.

Heat warning: the filter may become hot during extended use. Use caution when removing it from the instrument.

Recommended lifespan: 3 years from the Date of Manufacture. The product is immediately unsafe and must be discarded if it has any damage (scratches, pinholes, delamination, cracks), regardless of age.

Storage & transport: avoid touching the optical surfaces. Store and transport flat in the original packaging or a dry, protective case to prevent scratches, pressure and deformation.

Cleaning: blow off dust with clean air and wipe smudges with a soft, dry, non-abrasive cloth only. Do NOT use liquid cleaners or alcohol — they will permanently damage the polymer filter.

Product classification: a solar filter accessory for optical instruments. This product is NOT personal protective equipment (PPE) and is not subject to PPE conformity marking under Regulation (EU) 2016/425, which applies only to eyewear worn or held for personal protection.

Filter material reference: the solar filter material has been independently tested to the optical requirements of EN ISO 12312-2:2015 — Filters for direct observation of the sun (transmittance, uniformity and material quality) — by an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory. This describes the material's optical performance only; the standard's eyewear provisions do not apply to a front-aperture instrument filter.
